ABOUT
THE CONGRESS
The International Publishers Association (IPA) is the world's largest federation of national, regional and specialist publishers' associations.
The IPA organizes the International Publishers Congress every two years, on even years, in cooperation with the IPA member in the host country. The Congress offers an unrivalled platform for networking and discussion among the world's publishers on industry challenges and opportunities.
THE IPA
Established in 1896, the International Publishers Association (IPA) is the world’s largest federation of publishers associations.
The IPA is an industry body with a human rights mandate whose mission is to promote and protect publishing and raise awareness of publishing as a force for economic, cultural and social development. Working in cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and other supranational bodies, the IPA champions the interests of book and journal publishing at national and supranational level. Internationally, the IPA actively opposes censorship and promotes copyright, freedom to publish (including through the IPA Prix Voltaire), and literacy.
JAKARTA :
SITE OF THE 2022 IPA CONGRESS
In 2019, Indonesia was noted to be the most productive publishing industry in Southeast Asia and, for decades, Jakarta has been the center of Indonesia’s literary scene. In 2020, Jakarta contributed 25% of the nation’s digital collection and registered 14,906 ISBNs.
Content produced by Indonesia’s publishing industry, both literary and non-fiction, has received much international recognition for its market potential. Ever since being named Guest of Honour at the 2015 Frankfurt Book Fair and Market Focus Country at the 2019 London Book Fair, Indonesia has striven to elevate its position in the global literary scene. The proliferation of national and international literary festivals in Indonesia as well as publishing activities aimed at promoting reading, improving literacy, and creating networking opportunities within the creative industry demonstrate this commitment.
Indonesia—as represented by IKAPI, the Association of Indonesian Publishers (IKAPI)— is one of the four Southeast Asian countries with full membership in the International Publishers Association (IPA).
In November 2022, Jakarta will host the 33rd International Publishers Congress (IPA Congress)—the first time ever the congress will be held in Southeast Asia. After a period of global stagnation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, this congress is expected to lift spirits, promote the exchange of ideas, and generate creative innovations. Following the IPA Congress, Jakarta intends to continue its pursuit of becoming the hub for literacy, culture, and the arts in the region.
